Notes

Film

  • The big "love scene".
  • Starts with Anakin telling Padmé that he's thought about her every day they were apart, and ends with Anakin saying he'll do anything she asks.
  • Padmé does not speak in this minute.

Podcast

  • Referenced: Meat Loaf's "I'll Do Anything for Love (But I Won't do That)".
  • How long have they been on Naboo, at this point?
  • Hayden Christiansen does a pretty good (some would say too good) job of playing the uncomfortably awkward teenager with no romantic experience.
  • From the dialog, it almost sounds like Anakin is trying to tell Padmé that she smells bad (i.e. "The closer I get to you, the worse it gets" etc.)
  • Ring theory: Pivotal moments by firelight in both this movie and ESB—Anakin losing his path and Luke meeting Yoda and beginning his journey to become a Jedi.
  • Stalking facts.
    • Matt and Pete overestimate the statistics.
    • People being stalked by more than one person at once.
    • Stalking was first outlawed in the US in 1990 in California.
  • Ways other movies/genres would handle this scene.
    • Padmé should have a quirky best friend trying to set them up, or a sister to talk to about her feelings or something for exposition.
    • Who set this romantic scene?
  • Star Wars normally taps into archetypes with a space twist. By contrast, this scene happens more in a vacuum.
  • Matt wanted be positive this week but he was worn down.
Matt saw the movie several times the first weekend.
These were the scenes that broke him.
At the time he worked as a script reader for Imagine Entertainment. His brain was hyper-attuned to bad writing as a result.

Meta Minute

  • 20:05 podcast episode length.
  • Cold open: 8-DAY-GREEDO call from "George" and "Ralph".

Quotes

  • Pete: Those crazy Kaminoan nights.
  • Matt: I think Australian men are dogs. They're Dingos.
  • Pete: Nothing's more romantic than Droopy McCool.
