Guests

Notes

Film

  • "He has too much of his father in him" line spoken.
  • John Williams flexes his musical composing muscles. The music really adds to the emotion of the scene, and the whole scene is really great cinema. It is one of the iconic camera shots in the movie.
  • The Lars family landspeeder is shown.

Podcast

  • Given the father line, how much did Lucas actually know when he was writing this?
  • Uncle Owen is a jerk and would have called Luke reckless regardless of what he did.
  • Uncle Owen never wanted to be a father and was saddled with Luke; or Luke was just SUCH a whiny brat. Also, Aunt Beru likes Luke and maybe this annoys Uncle Owen.
  • Aunt Beru's lines are dubbed in all versions of the movie after the very original.
  • Binary stars are actually more common that single star systems in our galaxy.
  • Luke's tunic is very ill-fitting.
  • C-3PO is very startled by the restraining bolt / droid caller - does it hurt? Also, C-3PO changes from this point on - he is much more subservient; is this due to the restraining bolt / caller?

Meta Minute

  • 14:56 podcast episode length.
  • Welcome and thanks to Josh.
  • Josh confirms that he's seen the Star Wars movies before.
    • He remembers seeing ESB in a theater when he was 3 years old ("which, BTW, is inappropriate now that I have a 3-year old").
    • Star Wars has always been there from Josh's perspective.
  • Referenced: Excalibur.
  • Josh remembers being asked a Star Wars trivia question while waiting in line for Episode 1 in 1999. What are the names of the twin suns? Tatoo 1 and Tatoo 2.
  • What is the structure of the 'Tatooine system'? And how does Dantooine fit in?
  • More love for John Williams' musical score in this movie.
  • Star Wars as a silent movie - no sounds, just music.
  • The last 5 minutes of Episode 3 ("Sorry Pete") actually are silent and evoke this scene.
  • Note - The abundance of binary (as compared to single) stars in our galaxy was later corroborated by Ryan the Scientist in minute 57.
  • Luke stares at the French horn.

Quotes

  • Josh: This isn't really about moisture evaporators, is it?
  • Pete: Yeah, this movie changes every 5 minutes.
