Notes
Film
- Starts with Yoda dying.
- Ends with Luke whining that he can't do it.
- Awkward long take of Luke reacting to Yoda dying.
Podcast
- Yoda finally uses the Force to knock over the bucket.
- We've only seen two Jedi die so far and they've both vanished. The assumption was that this is how all Jedi die but, as we find out in the Prequels, this seems to be a Force power that only some Jedi learn.
- The rules of Force ghosts are not known or clear.
- Tony's father once asked him what happened to Yoda in this scene:
Tony: He died.
Father: And he just disappears?
Tony: Yeah, the character just disappeared.
Father: Well, you save on funeral costs.
- Yoda should have a disappeared revealing Frank Oz's hand - and then his hand should have slowly disappeared as well.
- The old Star Wars trope of welding is utilised. Perhaps Luke was talking about the welding when he said "I can't do it".
- Does R2-D2 remember all of this and does he even know that Yoda has died?
- What else Luke could have been talking about when he said "I can't do it".
- Does R2-D2 know that Vader is Luke's father? If so, does Luke ever find out that R2 knew? If so, how does Luke react?
- An imagined scene in which Darth Vader and C-3PO talk to each other alone after all this time.
- C-3PO refers to anyone that used to own him as "Master" - no matter how long ago, or briefly, they owned him.
- They should have wiped R2-D2's memory at the same time as they wiped C-3PO's to avoid R2 inadvertently telling C-3PO anything.
- The nature of the relationship between R2-D2 and C-3PO. R2 doesn't really seem to like C-3PO. C-3PO definitely likes R2 more than R2 likes C-3PO.
- Mentioned: David Spade and Chris Farley (who appeared together in Tommy Boy).
- Yoda is a rare character in an actiony movie to die of old age.
- Or did Luke "accidentally" kill Yoda during Force lightning training.
- Luke harming Yoda would certainly have indicated that he was turning to the Dark Side - more than anything else that Luke did in the movies.
- Anakin as a Force ghost must result in some very awkward conversations with the other Force ghosts.
- Force ghosts and their various abilities / attributes - including how they get around. Pete suggests that they have to swim everywhere.
- Or there is a Force ghost spaceship.
- In The Empire Strikes Back Ben tells Luke that he can't interfere on Bespin; Pete says that this is because Ben doesn't have time to swim there.
- Luke whines to R2-D2. Everyone whines to R2-D2 all the time. Maybe this is a feature of astromech droids. The only problem is that R2-D2 records everything which may not be ideal if he accidentally plays it back at the wrong moment.
Tony's last thoughts on Return of the Jedi. Initially he says that it's his third favorite Star Wars movie after The Empire Strikes Back and A New Hope. (This is the beginning of the movie ranking system utilised by the podcast.) He then changes his rankings to 5, 4, 3, 6, 1, 2. Attack of the Clones is definitely his least favorite. All the uncomfortable talk.
- Thanks to, and from, Tony for the week.
- Tony has completed the trilogy and is now in the Hall of Heroes. Joe Dator and Adam Santiago are the only other members of the Hall at this time.
- Tony points out that Luke should have said to Yoda "You'll be dead!".
- The hosts imagine that they, and the podcast, are all a part of Han Solo's fever dream.
- Support the Show.
Meta Minute
- 23:36 podcast episode length.
- This episode is important in the history of SWM because it debuts both the "rank the movies" feature and documenting Trifecta guests.
- C-3PO refers to Anakin as "Master Anakin", in both The Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith and not as "Master Ani".
- Pete's imagined scenario where R2 keeps a backup copy of C-3PO's memory is actually the framing device for the Lego Star Wars: Droid Tales animated series.
Quotes
- Alex: It's our daily podcast in which we analyze, scrutinize, and finally dies the Star Wars movies one exciting minute at a time.
- Tony: He <C-3PO> calls him Ani. (As Darth Vader) Don't call me that. Alex: (Also as Vader) Not in front of Grand Moff Jerjerrod.
- Alex: Or they could have just said to R2 "I command you, don't say anything to C-3PO about you know who being you know who's you know what".
- Tony: (As Yoda) If this is the way the Force is going then I'd rather be dead.
- Alex: Star Wars Episode II: "The One After That".
