Summary

We hear a familiar beeping and a distinctive reply before catching sight of ARTOO-DETOO and SEE-THREEPIO, making their way along the road toward the ominous palace of Jabba the Hutt.

Notes

Film

  • Starts with R2-D2 and C-3PO on the road to Jabba's Palace.
  • Ends with "Artoo Detoowha" being introduced to a door.

Podcast

  • Jordan is responsible for editing the new slate of Marvel Comics Star Wars adaptations.
  • A scene of Luke completing his lightsaber and giving it to R2-D2 between the last minute and this minute was cut from the movie.
  • Other ways that this scene could have gone.
  • Star Wars deleted scenes are considered canon unless they contradict something else shown in the movies. Things that are canonical as a result of this rule.
  • The hosts realize that Jordan, given his comic book work, is their gateway into official Star Wars canon.
  • Back to the minute in question.
  • Luckily there is a lot of flat ground around on Tatooine for R2-D2 to roll on.
  • C-3PO is Jordan's favorite character.
  • This is another "droids on Tatooine" opening / entry into a Star Wars movie.
  • The droids deliver unclear exposition as they walk along. Do they really know what's actually going on? R2-D2 knows and C-3PO doesn't have a clue.
  • What is the plan for this rescue? (This will become a major theme for the upcoming podcast episodes).
  • This scene contains the only special edition or Blu-ray change in minutes 6 through 10. The shot of the droids approaching the door is zoomed out much further to show that the door is actually enormous.
  • Where this door is in relation to Jabba's Palace.
  • Where the various elements of this sequence were filmed. The door set was in Elstree Studios and these scenes were shot on days 2 and 3 of shooting the movie. (The first day of shooting was the sandstorm.)
  • Pronunciation differences - C-3PO says "JAB-ba" whereas everyone else seems to say "JAH-ba".
  • Questions about the door:
    • Is the thing that extends a droid or a camera?
    • If it is a droid, is it a stand-alone droid that lives in the door, or is the whole door a droid?
    • Either way, are the droid/s involved in the door happy with their lot in life?
  • In theory, C-3PO should be better at speaking to the door than he seems to be.
  • C-3PO and R2-D2 could have just not knocked and left. How the movie would have been different if this happened.
  • The door droid must not be happy with being a door and this is why he is cranky.
  • The door droid may actually be responsible for all of the security at the palace, or the entire palace is one big droid.
  • Is this the main entrance to the palace? There are a lot of people in the palace and there are no spaceships around so the hosts think that it is probably just a loading dock of some kind.
  • Reasons that the droids are using this door instead of the main door.
  • Could C-3PO really short-circuit R2-D2 just by telling him something shocking? Or is C-3PO speaking metaphorically.
  • R2-D2 sounds wimpy and childlike in this entire scene
  • When did C-3PO hear all these things about Jabba the Hutt? From Han Solo on the Millennium Falcon or from Chewbacca when he was fixing C-3PO.
  • More talk of doors and droids coming up.

Meta Minute

  • 23:38 podcast episode length.
  • Jordan is the first podcast guest for Return of the Jedi.
  • Wookieepedia says that the eyeball on a stick is a TT-8L/Y7 gatekeeper droid, and it is installed in (and presumably cannot leave) the door.

Quotes

  • Alex: This plan is a terrible plan for rescuing one person from the clutches of Jabba the Hutt.
