Notes
Film
- Starts with Kylo Ren igniting his lightsaber and ends with Rey being drawn to one of the praetorian guards.
- Second appearance of ensign Pamich Nerro Goode.
- First time the word "bastard" is used.
Podcast
- How is society doing? Well they have Loki Charms (cereal) now.
- Mentioned: Spurious Correlations website.
- The upcoming laser sword fight (it's not a duel) is among Alex's favorite Star Wars things period.
- The fight adds new wrinkles that we haven't yet seen; it's not the same old same old.
- But if you watch one minute at a time, it does become painfully obvious that only a couple of people are fighting at a time and most of them are just standing in the background playfighting.
- What counts as "Star Wars" evolves, much like language evolves.
- Paul wants to let that happen as opposed to being prescriptivist and gatekeeping (pointless pedantry).
- Despite being old enough to see all of the original movies in the theater, Paul was happy how modern this film was.
- Paul's opinion is that The Rise of Skywalker backtracked when it said that the story has always been about Skywalkers and Palpatines which is not necessarily true.
- Movie studios tend to learn the wrong lessons from these things, but now with Disney+, they have a little bit more leeway to experiment maybe.
- Unlike perhaps every other fictional universe, Star Wars is still one continuous Story. That's as opposed to, say Spider-Man or even "Star Trek". Batman always gets rebooted and we see his origin story over again. James Bond doesn't care at all about continuity.
- Paul wants to let that happen as opposed to being prescriptivist and gatekeeping (pointless pedantry).
- Tonči Zonjić (illustrator, conceptual designs for this film and Solo). Praetorian guards are straight from his concept art. Referenced: "The Red & the Black" by Blue Öyster Cult.
- Armor can deflect lightsabers. Seems a bit like overkill, how often do they need to fight lightsaber guys? Shoutout to Matt Gourley's Stormtrooper armor.
- The lightsabers damage the floor. It's nice when combat has a realistic effect on the surroundings. Referenced: Ginsu Knife.
- Kylo Ren showing off on the off chance that Rey is watching.
- Almost everybody has a name, even if it's not in the credits. But there are notable unnamed exceptions.
- The star wars effect everybody in the the Galaxy, even those not involved in either side of the fighting.
- The Rebels get the plans for the Death Star, and they have proven that they can be unscrupulous at times, surely the New Republic must have tried to build their own.
- Bencio del Toro's character choice to have DJ stutter.
- Mentioned: The Love Guru, Ashton Kutcher's ad for Popchips.
- People referring to Finn as "Big" something: "Big Deal", "Big F.", etc.
- Paul will try to make it back to L.A. tomorrow.
- Call 8-DAY-GREEDO!
Meta Minute
- 38:26 podcast episode length.
- This is the first of five episodes in which Paul calls us from a new location that he has somehow sailed his yacht to. Today he's calling from Pyramid Lake, CA. Editor's note: Paul mistakenly refers to his location as "off the coast of Catalina". No wonder he's lost!
- The Monster Mash breakfast cereals were released for the 50th anniversary of Monster cereals (2021–2023), not for the 50th anniversary of the Halloween novelty song "Monster Mash", which debuted in 1962.
Quotes
- Pete: All my notes on society are breakfast cereal-related.
- Paul: How many marriages crumbled that had a fruit layer in their wedding cake?
