Notes

Film

  • Starts just as yesterday ended with Kylo Ren fighting some guys and ends with Kylo saying it's time to let old thing—

Podcast

  • Referenced: Thing T. Thing from The Addams Family
  • Repressed memories of 30-year-old commercials, in this case, Nestle's white chocolate.
  • Callback to one of Paul's previous appearances on the show .
  • The guards' faceless helmets. It makes it clear these guys cannot be reasoned with (otherwise the last guy standing should've given up).
  • The one-two of cool fighting moves of the drop and stab and throw and stab were definitely big applause moments in the theater.
    • They did the exact same move in the final season of "Game of Thrones" (to quote Paul: "when the little one is fighting the ice man").
  • To put it in professional wrestling lingo, Kylo Ren goes from a "heel" to a "face", but turns out he was a heel the entire time (note: see below). Compare to "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.
    • Once the fight was over, how did Kylo Ren think this was going to go? Was there any chance that he was going to turn to the good side at this point? It adds to our investment in the character that we don't know for sure.
      • What if, at the end of Return of the Jedi, Vader doesn't die and instead overthrows the Emperor for selfish reasons? Would he still have gone back to the good side at that point?
  • Every moment while they are talking, Resistance members are getting picked off and dying. Rey could have found a speedy way to end the conversation, such as saying she would join Kylo, even if just to get them to stop the killing.
  • Recall, the show is both on YouTube and is a podcast.

Meta Minute

  • 21:17 podcast episode length.
  • 8-DAY-GREEDO call with a complaint to the First Order Bank customer service line.
  • Paul has somehow found a signal and is calling us from scenic Elephant Island, Antarctica. At a distance of approximately 8,500 miles (13700 km) from London, he must have traveled (sailed or flown, doesn't matter as it's essentially a straight shot once you leave the English Channel) at a brisk 355 mph (close to half the speed of sound!).
    • On the date this episode aired, Elephant Island was experiencing highs of 39°F and lows of 28°F (4°C and -2°C, respectively)[1]. So, not exactly light jacket weather!
  • A "double turn" in wrestling refers to a bad guy "heel" becoming a good guy "face" while his opponent does the opposite (in essence there are two "turns" going in opposite directions). The closest term to what Pete is describing would be a "swerve".

Quotes

  • Pete: It's the Mac Tonight of Nestlé.
  • Pete: They flew in a space manatee with a helicopter.
