Notes

Film

  • Starts with Luke reaching out to see Leia in a bubble and ends with Rey asking Luke "why did you—"
  • Appearance of "Ben Swolo".

Podcast

The ripple

  • Steele had a lot to talk about from yesterday about the ripple and bodies of water in general.
    • Steele is disappointed and feels that the ripple in the glass of Jurassic Park was more impressive.
    • But then, it's been a while since Luke has talked to the Force and he's rusty.
  • The audience has had two years of Luke Skywalker anticipation thinking of all the things he's going to do in this movie. Mentioned: the fountains at the Bellagio hotel and Casino, George Clooney.
  • What is the purpose of this pool, is it just like a zen garden for him to meditate on?
    • According to the visual dictionary it's just a mosaic in the floor it's probably not even supposed to have water.
    • Steele thought it was supposed to be some kind of Force instruments (like the kind that Grogu sat on in "The Mandalorian") but he may have misread the situation.
  • Leia was the first [living] person that Luke reached out to using the Force. Recall that in the novelization, it opens with Luke fantasizing about his life with Camie had he not gone off with Obi-Wan.
  • Assuming Princess Leia was safe and it was just Han, Chewie, and the droids on Cloud City, would Luke still have left Dagobah to rescue them? That's an unfair question to ask of your Jedi hero, strike it from the record.

Leia in the bubble

  • No bacta.
  • The idea that the opening shot of tilting down to look at a planet but it actually being Finn's bubble. But people probably would have hated that.
    • Trolling the audience: "this is not going to go the way you think." Any way you do it, people might potentially hate it.
  • Steele's thoughts on "Carrie Poppins":
He was completely stunned into disbelief by it; it gave him a concussion, it was like describing a weird dream he had had. And he didn't come out of the haze until Rey grabbed the lightsaber in Snoke's throne room.
You have your own idea of how Star Wars should work, and when a new power or ability is presented, it might not fit into your ideas. But afterwards he quite loved it. Maybe it's not super well executed, but maybe it can't be; when you're floating in space, you're going to look goofy.
  • Leia is very powerful in the Force, but it's not like it is in a video game where you level up and get this power and then that power in a set sequence. It's more like skateboarding, where everyone learns at different rates and has different specialties or areas they are stronger or weaker in. Mentioned Qui-Gon Jinn Force speed-running and the Living Force.
    • If Steele got one vote to change either Leia floating through space or Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan speed-running, it would be the latter.
      • He remembers seeing it the first time in the theaters and not being into it.

Other notes

  • In this movie, Mark Hamill is an old Luke Skywalker whereas in the next one he seems like he's just cosplaying as Luke Skywalker. Hamill is better at playing this aspect of Luke Skywalker than the one that he would rather be playing.
  • Fan attachment to the character of Luke Skywalker.
    • For Steele, seeing Luke struggle and not have everything come easy to him made him admire Luke all the more.
  • Steele got to interview the cast of this movie for Australian morning tv. Mark Hamill was the one he was most excited to speak to, but he spent too long speaking to the other interviewers and so Steele missed out.
    • Luke taught us so many lessons in the Original Trilogy, and the question Steele wanted to ask him was "what lesson is he going to come back and teach us in Last Jedi?"
      • What Steele would have answered to that question now that he's seen the movie is that your path is not set in stone and you can still write the wrongs even late in life.
  • It's frustrating that Mark Hamill doesn't fully realize how good the movie is and how good his part in it was. But also the internet has made more of his comments tham he intended. If you can imagine that.
    • For better for worse, Mark Hamill says what he means and is naive to the danger of being taken out of context.
  • As Star Wars fans, we have to realize that in the grand scheme of things, Star Wars is not that important. That's not to say that you shouldn't love things that aren't important; that's why we're here.

Dive into the dyad

  • Is it possible that Luke reaching out to Leia through the Force somehow triggered this Force call between Rey and kylo? Or Luke reconnecting with the Force showed up as a blip on Snoke/Palpatine's radar.
  • Once again, Rey is emotional and hotheaded in their conversation whereas Kylo Ren is more calm and grounded.
  • The tone of this scene reads a little bit too goofy.
    • Where is the line between too serious and too goofy? If the dialogue was all fantasy "Game-of-Thrones-serious", it wouldn't feel natural. *Recall that they actually flew Adam Driver out to the island for Daisy Ridley to play off of, even though his character wasn't present in the scene. It really threw off fan speculation as to why he was there.
  • Kylo Ren is a complicated character in that he doesn't really lie ever. At least until things are ret-conned by the next movie.
    • If he did hate his father his life would be a lot easier.
  • The use of the term 'cowl'.
  • The only other topless gentleman we've seen in Star Wars was the rancor keeper Malakili.
  • Steele is free tomorrow and he will be back.
  • Plug for http://starwarsminute.com/merch. They don't sell cowls, but you could buy a hoodie and wear it like a cowl if you want.

Meta Minute

  • 44:31 podcast episode length.
  • Only viewers on YouTube will notice Pete's visual gag this episode.
  • Looking at Google Trends, there does not seem to be any spike in searches for the term 'cowl' that correlates with release of this movie, either in the US or worldwide.
    • The term cowl comes from the Latin cucullus ("hood"), via the Old English cūle and then the Middle English coule.

Quotes

  • Pete: I thought you were going to say that you were disappointed there wasn't a Brontosaurus on the island.
  • Pete: Is there a Mrs. reflecting pool?
  • Steele: I've got to apologize to this pool. Pete: Apoologize.
  • Pete: Why does Steele Saunders hate Star Wars fans??
  • Steele: Less Dunham, more dyad!
  • Steele: (re: Ben Swolo), The only thing that matches his [Adam Driver's] chest is his acting range!
  • Pete: Always be sithing.
