Notes

Film

  • It starts with Rey ordering Luke to stop and ends with Luke telling Rey about the time he looked inside Ben Solo.
  • Appearance of "Force cushioning".

Podcast

  • Pete's note is "hitting an old man with a stick".
  • Rey asking Luke "did you create Kylo Ren" is a weird way of phrasing it. It's almost asking for him to provide an Obi-Wan-style "from a certain point of view" explanation.
  • Luke's old friend the antenna from Bespin.
  • Luke's strange fighting stance. It's very similar to how he will "fight" Kylo Ren later on. He's not really fighting back, like a parent letting a child tire themselves out.
  • The Force is supposed to be only for knowledge and defense. This is a useful parenting tool for Pete when he wants his kids to stop fighting.
  • The third version of the night that Ben solo destroyed the temple. Referenced: the "Three's Company" double entendre.
  • Pete is right, it is pretty weird to be scanning sleeping kids. Was this standard practice for the old Jedi? Maybe not while they were asleep.
  • Riley's a staunch defender of the other two moving parts to the story—the Canto Bight storyline and the Holdo-Poe dynamic.
    • People call Canto Bight a "side quest" and accuse it of not driving the plot, but it drives the character of Finn who is a main character in this story.
  • It would be nice if our leads got to spend more time together in this movie, but that's a very "Star Wars" thing to do to break up your main characters. Callback to Luke on the Falcon in this movie.
    • The Hosts discussed how Luke is almost never on the Falcon in any of the movies except for Star Wars. Compared to, at the end of this movie, when Rey finally actually meets Poe. They make a thing of it because she really hasn't met him up to this point.
      • It would be funny if they kept it going and they didn't even meet until the end of Rise of Skywalker.
  • Rey is such a well developed character, but unfortunately it takes away the development and does a disservice to the other characters in the story.
  • The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi actually work as a two-part episode because, although the plot isn't resolved, all the characters have their arcs beginning and ending.
    • And then with The Rise of Skywalker, they have to give them their arcs and then resolve them in much less real estate.
      • It would have been nice, for example, to give Finn more to do.
  • Pete is continuing his idea that it might have been good to not be locked into the trilogy structure and instead have there be an Episode X that wrapped up the whole Saga as opposed to just wrapping up the Sequel trilogy.
    • Splitting the last movie in a series into two parts à la The Hunger Games or Harry Potter.
    • If they really wanted to make this a trilogy, they should have either had one person do all three movies or have three different people to do the movies (which was the original intent). It also contributes to why VIII sort of feels like the end of a trilogy because originally, when Rian Johnson was pegged to write both VIII AND IX, he had to cram some of his ideas for IX back into VIII.
    • Also, originally they had planned for each of the three mains to have their own movie, where Han got Episode VII, Luke got Episode VIII, and Leia was supposed to have Episode IX, but Carrie's death changed everything.

Meta Minute

  • 27:34 podcast episode length.
  • The Hosts describe Vader fighting Luke in Empire in a similar vein to how they describe Luke fighting Rey and later Kylo, but no direct connection is made between these moments.
  • The credits for this movie begin during minute 144, so there are a little under 9 minutes of credits.

Quotes

  • Alex: (paraphrasing Pete) "Wrecta the Hutt".
  • Alex: Throwing around air quotes like nobody's business.
  • Pete: Luke ends, spoiler alert.
