Notes

Film

  • Starts with Ben being amazed at how strong the Force was with young Anakin Skywalker.
Ends with Ben saying that Luke and his twin sister (not yet named) were hidden away from the Emperor.

Podcast

  • Ben should have talked about midi-chlorians in this scene; it was the perfect time. Why Yoda and Ben stayed away from midi-chlorians? According to EU, midi-chlorians were just a Jedi theory which has since been debunked in the Star Wars universe.
    • Callback to the 8-DAY-GREEDO call from Eric Carney—George Lucas theorized that midi-chlorians were just a theory that the Jedi were wrong about.
  • The Making of Return of the Jedi book by J. W. Rinzler (insert totally organic plug for starwarsminute.com/amazon). In the story conferences Lucas said that:
    • Having the Force isn't due to biology; it just comes down to training.
    • Yoda and the Emperor aren't Jedi - they are Jedi Masters and he specifically mentioned they would not wield lightsabers.
  • Midi-chlorians are definitely still canon.
  • Ben gives Luke a very simplified version of the actual story.
  • Alec Guinness's acting and the quality of the direction. Alec Guinness complaining about the movies like Harrison Ford does.
  • Natalie Portman and the low quality of her performance in the Prequels.
  • What is Luke basing his "there's still good in him" comment regarding Darth Vader on? The last time Luke saw Darth Vader he was attacking him and cutting off his hand.
  • Why it is Luke's destiny to confront Darth Vader.
  • Ben lays a heavy guilt trip on Luke.
  • What Jedi get when they die and go to Jedi heaven.
  • Ben should have once again told Luke that Darth Vader is not his father and that Darth Vader murdered his father.
  • Ben's line regarding Darth Vader "being more machine than man" indicates that Anakin slowly became Vader over time.
  • Star Wars tropes that may happen in Episode VII.
  • Why Ben is so against prosthetic limbs.
    • To quote Pete, "Everybody's got a robot hand—this is Star Wars."
  • Using the line "I guess the Emperor has already won" IRL to guilt people into doing things for you.
  • Luke digesting a lot of information in this scene, including that there is another Skywalker. How Ben handles telling Luke about the other.
  • Ben and Luke aren't reacting to each other, and all the startling revelations, in any way.
  • Luke's understanding head tilt and bread-bowl haircut.
  • Luke keeps buying all the lies upon lies.
  • Is Leia really Luke's twin sister? Ben just quickly agreed to this to keep Luke happy and on-track.
  • The real fate of Luke's sister as a chamber-maid on Alderaan.
  • Why Ben really told Luke that Leia is his sister.
  • Ben being more powerful than Vader could ever imagine. Does this mean the ability to tell Luke whatever he wants to?

Force ghosting

  • Qui-Gon was a Force ghost to Yoda.
  • Is Force ghosting one-to-one or one-to-many?
  • For example, could Leia see all the Jedi Force ghosts?
  • Luke and Yoda can see / hear Force ghosts.
  • If it's a VOICE Force ghost call then everyone can hear it; if it is a VIDEO Force ghost call then only one person can see it. How this actually works.
  • Mentioned: "Dr. Spock" versus "Mr. Spock".
  • Ghost Qui-Gon taught Force-ghosting to alive Yoda and alive Ben.
  • Ghost Qui-Gon was the go-between for alive Yoda and Ben. They mostly shared recipes for soup with each other.
  • The alive person also needs to be Force capable before they can see Force ghosts.
  • Luke is always very negative when a new task is raised.
  • Who really blew up the Death Star and what Luke has, or hasn't, achieved up to this point.
  • Mentioned: Ernest Goes to Africa (1997); Shaft (1971) and Shaft in Africa (1973).
  • Support the Show.

Meta Minute

  • 23:15 podcast episode length.
  • Cold-open: 8-DAY-GREEDO call by Tom from Chicago - Shout out to Mark Hamill's acting when, in the space of 4 seconds, Luke needs to deal with finding out that there's another Skywalker, he needs to fight Darth Vader again and Yoda has died. Hamill reacts to all of this with just his facial expressions.
  • This episode launched the theory that Luke and is the origin of referring to Luke's "true" sister as 'Marie Skywalker'. In the Leigh Brackett draft, her name was Nellith, but this was crossed out.
  • Leonard Nimoy, who is most beloved by sci-fi fans for his portrayal of Spock on Star Trek, passed away on February 27th, 2015, 11 days before this episode aired.
  • The idea of Force ghosts as a "cosmic operator" has come up before on the show.

Quotes

  • Alex: <As Ben> I was wrong, so sue me... Lets see you do any better.
  • Pete: <As Luke whispering to Darth Vader> Can we still do that "Galaxy" thing?
  • Alex: <As Luke first seeing ghost Qui-Gon> A g-g-gh-ghost!
  • Alex: I'm not 'fraid of any ghosts.
