As Ben speaks, Luke settles on a stump, mesmerized. Artoo comes over to offer his comforting presence.

  • Starts with Ben being amazed at how strong the Force was with young Anakin Skywalker.
Ends with Ben saying that Luke and his twin sister (not yet named) were hidden away from the Emperor.


  • Ben should have talked about midi-chlorians in this scene; it was the perfect time. Why Yoda and Ben stayed away from midi-chlorians? According to EU, midi-chlorians were just a Jedi theory which has since been debunked in the Star Wars universe.
    • Callback to the 8-DAY-GREEDO call from Eric Carney—George Lucas theorized that midi-chlorians were just a theory that the Jedi were wrong about.
  • The Making of Return of the Jedi book by J. W. Rinzler (insert totally organic plug for In the story conferences Lucas said that:
    • Having the Force isn't due to biology; it just comes down to training.
    • Yoda and the Emperor aren't Jedi - they are Jedi Masters and he specifically mentioned they would not wield lightsabers.
  • Midi-chlorians are definitely still canon.
  • Ben gives Luke a very simplified version of the actual story.

Force ghosting

  • Qui-Gon was a Force ghost to Yoda.
  • Is Force ghosting one-to-one or one-to-many?
  • For example, could Leia see all the Jedi Force ghosts?
  • Luke and Yoda can see / hear Force ghosts.
  • If it's a VOICE Force ghost call then everyone can hear it; if it is a VIDEO Force ghost call then only one person can see it. How this actually works.

  • Ghost Qui-Gon taught Force-ghosting to alive Yoda and alive Ben.
  • Ghost Qui-Gon was the go-between for alive Yoda and Ben. They mostly shared recipes for soup with each other.

  • Cold-open: 8-DAY-GREEDO call by Tom from Chicago - Shout out to Mark Hamill's acting when, in the space of 4 seconds, Luke needs to deal with finding out that there's another Skywalker, he needs to fight Darth Vader again and Yoda has died. Hamill reacts to all of this with just his facial expressions.
  • This episode launched the theory that Luke and is the origin of referring to Luke's "true" sister as 'Marie Skywalker'. In the Leigh Brackett draft, her name was Nellith, but this was crossed out.
  • Leonard Nimoy, who is most beloved by sci-fi fans for his portrayal of Spock on Star Trek, passed away on February 27th, 2015, 11 days before this episode aired.
