Notes

Film

  • Starts with Han having a bad feeling about this (i.e. the trash compactor) and ends with Stormtroopers opening a closet.
  • This minute includes the scene in which the Stormtrooper hits his head on the door of the 'Pol Treidum Memorial Control Room'.

Podcast

  • Luke sounds like an idiot with his "The walls are moving". Although he is right and the line is probably there as it's not obvious on screen that the walls are moving.
  • The others jump into action almost immediately.
  • Is this a regularly scheduled compacting or do the Imperials set it in motion to kill the invaders? If the latter, how this decision was made.
  • The Stormtroopers manage to pick the lock on the control room. One of the first times that they are not defeated by a locked door.
  • One of Joe's favorite Star Wars lines is in this minute "Where can he beeee?".
  • Pol Treidum is shown lying on the floor of his Memorial Control Room. Pete hopes that Pol Treidum isn't dead.
  • What the Stormtrooper line "See to him" is actually referring to.
  • Stormtroopers dressing in all white is odd for bad guys. Is this to make Darth Vader really stand-out?
  • There are a few characters dressed in black in the movies (e.g. Darth Vader, the TIE fighter pilots etc.) - is this space camouflage?
  • The noise of the trash compactor is almost the music of this scene and heightens the tension. That's why Ben Burtt is a genius that wins Academy Awards.
  • Referenced: 'A Day in the Life' by The Beatles.
  • In regards to the trash compactor:
    • There is a nice birds-eye view of it in this scene.
    • Walls closing in is a popular movie trope used throughout cinema history.
  • Referenced: The Mask of Fu Manchu.
  • The speed of the trash compactor walls is perfect for the action that occurs in this scene. Actually, all moving walls in cinema move quite slowly. Reasons why are discussed.
  • Credit to George Lucas - the walls closing in here actually have a purpose (i.e. compacting the trash).
  • The heroes are lucky that this is a trash compactor and not a trash incinerator.
  • Carrie Fisher looks very weary at the beginning of this minute. Method acting, or genuine annoyance?

Meta Minute

  • 16:43 podcast episode length.
  • The hosts discuss how - back in the Dark Ages - knowing that the Stormtrooper hits his head in this scene was one of the first indications of a 'next level' Star Wars fan. However nowadays this fact is considered passe and Star Wars fandom has gone to a whole new level again.
  • In Attack of the Clones ("Sorry Pete") Jango Fett hits his head on a door to indicate that this a genetic / cloned trait in the Stormtroopers. The hosts can't decide if they love this or hate it, similar to how they feel about Chewbacca giving Yoda a piggy-back ride.
  • Thanks to Joe for the week. Joe talks about when he was about 12 (1987) and Starlog released their 10th Anniversary Star Wars edition. He read it until the cover literally fell of and it was then that he realised he liked Star Wars more than most other people. He then went through the next 10 years thinking he knew everything there was to know about Star Wars until he met PTR and realised that he knew virtually nothing.

Quotes

  • Joe: And I'm Joe Mazel and I've got a bad feeling about this.
  • Joe: Excuse me, I have to get a drink (In response to a "Sorry Pete").
  • Pete: One Stormtrooper says to the other...
