Notes

Film

  • Starts with the Stormtroopers finally entering the 'Pol Treidum Memorial Computer <sic> Room' and ends with our heroes in the trash compactor desperately yelling for C-3PO to help them.

Podcast

  • One final shot of Pol Treidum in this minute. Lying on the floor as a corpse.
  • Doug points out that this is an exciting minute with a lot going on.
  • C-3PO comes out of the closet and is truthful, but only to a point. He "Lando Calrissian's" them.
  • C-3PO is always looking out for himself, which does not seem to be the best trait for a robot to have.
  • R2-D2 is insanely loyal, almost to a fault.
  • It is surprising that the Stormtrooper lets the droids just wander out of the control room so easily. It might be the same Stormtrooper that hit his head on the door on the way in - he's not their brightest Stormtrooper so he was given door and droid guarding duties and even failed at that.
  • Alex points out that the good thing about being a Stormtrooper is that you can blame the other guy for mistakes given that you all look the same.
  • C-3PO is laying the groundwork for life as an Imperial droid.
  • How do Stormtroopers dress and behave when they're not Stormtroopers? Where do they go, or are they in costume the whole time.
  • Doug says that initially he didn't realize that Stormtroopers were just guys in costumes; he thought that they were robots or something else.
  • The trash compactor sequence is simple and is a real cliffhanger in the movie; Lucas forgot to include these type of scenes in the prequels.
  • Han Solo is dedicated to the 'pool noodle' pole that he grabs to jam the walls, even though it is clearly totally ineffectual and gives way almost immediately.
  • What type of trash on The Death Star requires compacting? Perhaps this is where Vader throws all the guys that he chokes; the hosts imagine some versions of the scene showing this happening.
  • Trash falling on our heroes periodically throughout the scene.

Meta Minute

  • 10:00 podcast episode length.
  • Ad-read: LessAccounting.com
  • In regards to the previous minute:
    • John Williams did write music for the Dianoga scene but Lucas opted not to use it as the scene was more scary with just the sound effects.
    • Mark Hamill burst a blood vessel in his left eye while holding his breathe under water during filming. They therefore only filmed him from the right side for the rest of the scene.
  • Doug asks a great question at the end of this podcast episode - how many more episodes will the hosts be talking about the trash compactor for (i.e. how long does it take them to get out)? 1, 2 or 3 minutes? Pete and Alex are not really sure but Pete says probably for most of the week. (Note - it's interesting to see how imprecise people's memories of movie scenes are regardless of how many times they've seen them.)
    • The gang finally leave the trash compactor in minute 84

Quotes

  • Pete: I'm glad you mentioned Pol Treidum right away because we have one last... this is probably the last time that we're gonna get to mention him. (Editor's note - This is definitely NOT the last time the hosts mention Pol Treidum!)
  • Doug: Poor Pol Treidum.
