Notes

Film

  • This minute starts with the burning dreadnought falling into D'Qar's atmosphere and ends with a startled Finn waking up in his medical bubble.
  • First appearance of Finn for this movie.

Podcast

  • Join Jackie's email list to find out how to attend her virtual comedy shows; it's easier to get off than it is to get on it. Good luck!
  • The name "Dreadnought" sounds like a reggae band that does covers of metal songs.
  • Hux is Jackie's favorite bad guy, he's so funny.
    • As he has previously stated, it took Pete a bit to get on board, but now he thinks Hux is over-the-top in a good way.
    • They didn't get real twins to play the Weasley twins in Harry Potter.
    • Pete likes to avoid seeing Star Wars actors in other movies before he sees them in Star Wars (Woody Harrelson is an exception), but it turns out he had seen Domhnall Gleeson in a bunch of stuff and hadn't realized it.
    • Hux's reaction to the Resistance escaping is very similar to Piett reacting to the Millennium Falcon jumping to hyperspace. Gleeson's acting choices are great in this scene.
  • The projector that Snoke uses to appear as a giant head is probably normally used for maps and navigation/PowerPoint presentations, but Snoke commandeered it.
    • The trope in Star Wars movies and shows where they all stand around a map and plan out what their next move is going to be.
    • Alex was surprised to see Snoke literally mopping the floor with Hux's face. Hux deserves to get yelled at because, after the dreadnought is destroyed, there are still like six other star destroyers not doing anything.
  • The smugness of the Empire / First Order.
  • Armitage Hux's First Order Monitor from earlier
    • The bad guys having British accents and the good guys having American accents, by and large.
  • Were The Last Jedi a musical, "We Have Them Tied on the End of a String" would be a recurring musical theme.
    • Callback to Star Wars where there is a tracker on the Falcon. Sweeping for bugs should be part of the start-up sequence.
      • Kind of like how when you stay at the Motel 6, the first thing you do is sweep for bugs. Actually the first thing you do is try not to stay at a Motel 6, then the second thing is sweep for bugs.
  • We're relieved that Finn survived (since the last time we saw him he was badly injured and his return was up in the air).
    • This confirms for us that TLJ takes place right after TFA.
    • Alex assumed he'd have some kind of cybernetics in this movie after his fight with Kylo Ren.
  • More comedic elements in this movie. It's more direct than the attempts at humor in the Prequels.
    • Per Jackie, Empire is the funniest Star Wars.
      • All Leia-Han interactions are good.
    • Luke had to carry the "serious baton", particularly in Return of the Jedi, but he's funny and sarcastic in this movie.
    • IG-11 and the comedy in "The Mandalorian". 'Comedy' versus 'lighter moments'.
    • Shout out to "Darths and Droids" web comic.
  • Both this movie and the last movie end with Finn being gravely injured and not with rest of the gang. Almost like John Boyega was on a movie-by-movie contract and they're worried he wouldn't come back.
    • Maybe it's like the reverse of Harrison Ford where they were trying to get him to not come back by giving him an out.
    • The filmmakers were painted into a corner by the on-the-fly decision to not kill Poe. They had to give a lot of Finn's agency to Poe, leaving Finn with unresolved plot threads.
      • It's unfortunate because Finn has a built-in story arc as a former First Order Stormtrooper. He finds his courage. Referenced: The Wizard of Oz.

Meta Minute

  • 25:44 podcast episode length.
  • The line from TFA that indicates that Finn survived was

MEDIC: Easy, easy. He's hurt. We've got a heartbeat.

  • This is only apparent in the video version, but Alex's cat makes another appearance (beginning at about 16:00).
  • No That Darn Cat Minute as of the date this episode aired.

Quotes

  • Pete: When in doubt, go metal.
  • Jackie: (re: Hux) …just a complete and utter tool bag.
  • Pete: Hux hubris.
  • Jackie: (in sloppy American accent) Hey ya bunch of mutts, you can't keep us down.
  • Pete: Everybody, don't sleep on C-3PO's comedy in The Rise of Skywalker.
