There are two ways to use templates, <nowiki>{{GuestTemplate}}</nowiki> or <nowiki>{{subst:GuestTemplate}}</nowiki>: the first means it can be changed and the page will update, the latter means it's expanded. We do that here, since we want to fill in the details. It would be nice to get updating templates (we use them for footers, etc), but it's just not feasible with the amount of page content. Do either of you guys have experience adding/using widgets? I have a notion to institute a rating system, wherein listeners can rate each episode and we can determine a series of greatest hits, most liked guests, etc. I was going to create a Wordpress page to attempt to do this, but it would replicate like 89% of this Wiki, so it seems like overkill. Also, which of you is their username @ gmail? I ask because I assumed it was kabutton, but kabutton@gmail.com seems to be a Katherine Button... --[[User:Cddig21|Cddig21]] ([[User talk:Cddig21|talk]]) 08:17, 8 June 2016 (PDT)

NICE! I absolutely LOVE your addition to Tony Consiglio! It will be some work to get it in for all guests though ;-) Is it worth including the date the statistics go up to? Spookypeanut (talk) 05:47, 7 June 2016 (PDT)

Yeah this is awesome. I would love to see the stats added to at least the recurring guests, since it might be unreasonable to add them to all guests. --Kabutton (talk) 06:02, 7 June 2016 (PDT)

I have no idea how to respond to you guys in message, could someone hip me to that? I have an ordered list in one of my sheets of guests in order of appearances; maybe that's a good way to start? Or just hit the guest list on here in order? Also - I feel like it would be good to do an official stats publish once each season wraps, so maybe I need some kind of tag that says something to the effect of "As of TPM-AOTC Hiatus" or something?

That could work. You (or I, I suppose) could make up a template to speed the process along so that you can just copy and paste and then fill in the particulars. The template could come with the tag that states when the stats were last updated. It's fun to have a project that will (hopefully) carry us through the hiatus!--Kabutton (talk) 06:23, 7 June 2016 (PDT)

Yes! Just did Asterios; I didn't realize/had forgotten he had an ensemble/live episode, which slightly screws up the data. I think the only thing I would need to add to the template would be a "wrapper" with the updated info. Like I said, I am hacking my way through it using whatever HTML will work. Tell me - is there a centralized css stylesheet? I feel like I am weighing down the pages with all the inline styling. --Cddig21 (talk) 06:29, 7 June 2016 (PDT)

You know more HTML than I can remember. I've be re-learning it as I've been going along. I do not believe there currently is anything centralize except whatever we make. Let me try throwing together some kind of template and see if that is of any use to you.--Kabutton (talk) 06:33, 7 June 2016 (PDT)

OK, I basically just copied the formatting you used for Tony and Asterios and made a template from it and I tested it out on Tricia Allen. To use the template you just use {{Statistics}} with the double curly brackets and then save and re-edit. It will populate the subheadings, but at this point you still need to input the values manually from your awesome spreadsheet. If we like this method enough, we can translclude the stats template in the new guest page template so it will save a step when creating new guest pages--Kabutton (talk) 06:42, 7 June 2016 (PDT)

Very cool. Now let me ask you this, maybe you know and maybe not; do you know of any way to embed a page in the Wiki? I can write queries that "create" an HTML page (like "show me all titles of the Crystal Beth episodes"), but no good way to embed the sheet/data without actually saving and uploading. Now let me go try that template business!--Cddig21 (talk) 06:45, 7 June 2016 (PDT)

I know it can be done, but I don't know how off the top of my head, and I'm not sure if you need any special MediaWiki extensions for that. Check the main MediaWiki site for more info.--Kabutton (talk) 06:48, 7 June 2016 (PDT)

So the template thing doesn't seem to be expanding once the file is saved and re-opened for editing. Am I missing something? I even tried to add my own in case it was user-specific but no dice. --Cddig21 (talk) 07:19, 7 June 2016 (PDT)

Did you use {{subst:Statistics}}? it's the subst that substitutes in the body of the template into the source code, instead of just displaying it on page view. --Kabutton (talk) 07:25, 7 June 2016 (PDT)

That'll do it. Updated my Matt Belknap page and will hit Tricia Allen next (so it stays all nice like). --Cddig21 (talk) 08:11, 7 June 2016 (PDT)

Perfect! In case you were wondering I put the link to your nifty spreadsheet on the Category:Guests page. Also: Remember to make yourself a User Page when you get around to it :-)--Kabutton (talk) 08:13, 7 June 2016 (PDT)

Sweet! Can you recommend a good resource for some of the wiki-only tricks you guys have been doing, like the template? I can do all kinds of stuff with HTML/CSS etc, but it looks like some of the stuff might be useful. Can you think of anything outside surfing the help section? Do you guys have a "cheat sheet?" Also, in this barrage of questions, I tried inserting a disclaimer about the veracity of the data in the Tricia Allen one. Do you think that's necessary? I added it to the template, but changes to templates don't seem to be retroactive to existing pages... --Cddig21 (talk) 08:26, 7 June 2016 (PDT)

This is the first wiki I've ever been involved with, and the few tricks I know I've learned as I went along. What about you, Henry?
I think that your html skills could come in pretty handy so I'm really glad you decided to join. Yeah unfortunately updating the template doesn't retroactively change the pages it's used on - you have to re-edit those pages. As far as the veracity section goes, it looks great but In not sure it's necessary. If you'd like to put it in you're more than welcome to. --Kabutton (talk) 09:23, 7 June 2016 (PDT)

I've learnt most as I went along too :-) Ask any specific questions and I'll answer them. Email me (my username at gmail) if you prefer it to this talk (which I find rather unwieldy).
